The KFC Children’s Bocas Lit Fest
The Bocas Lit Fest is a festival for all ages — including a full programme of activities for young readers, sponsored by KFC. During the last weekend in March and weekends during April, in the lead-up to the four-day Festival at the National Library in Port of Spain, there will be storytelling events every weekend for children aged 6 to 15, around the country at KFC restaurants. In Sangre Grande and Port of Spain, storytellers will be going to two children’s homes.
|
Children get the chance too to tell their stories. These stories are collected and published. The 2011 Children’s Stories From the Bocas Lit Fest has just been launched, and stories will be published in the Children’s section of the Express newspaper weekly.
To register for the storytelling event in Tobago on 31 March, please email consumerconnections@kfc-tt.com.

Children's authors and performers
Storytellers
Five masters of the oral tradition travel around the country to tell stories to children, and to hear theirs too.
Glenda Nassoma Rose Layne is an accomplished performance storyteller with a strong belief in the oral tradition. Her original scripts have won international awards and despite the demands of her position as head of the Culture department in the Division of Community Development and Culture in Tobago she finds time to practice her craft.
Theodora Ulerie (Auntie Thea) has been telling stories to people of all ages at home and abroad since 1984 through her Rise ’N Shine Workshops. She is also a poet, writer and community arts consultant.
Lylah Persad, storyteller and actor, is also a creative director, writer, former Business Manager of the Trinidad Theatre Workshop and founder of St Kitts Experience Theatre in St Kitts.
Miguel Browne, storyteller, dialect poet, rhythm rhymer, Talk Tent star, and history teacher at St. Mary's College, is a popular performer of long standing.
Dara Healy is a trained dancer and performance poet who writes and performs her work for children through the Idakeda Company and on TV and Radio both locally and internationally.
Children’s Authors
Six authors of children’s literature will read from their new titles.
Kellie Magnus is a Jamaican journalist and author of Little Lion Goes to School, Little Lion at Bat, and Jamaica: Caribbean Street Food. She writes feature articles for the New York editions of both the Daily News and the Jamaica Gleaner.
Al Ramsawak has written over 300 children's stories, including the Monkey Polo. He is also an artist, folklorist, and recipient of the Media Award 1997 for the best television documentary, the President's Humming Bird Silver Medal Award 2004 for folklore/culture, and is the story time columnist for the Sun Shine children's magazine in the Sunday Guardian newspaper.
Gregory Thompson, author of a series of books for young readers called The Adventures of Mantie and Andy, is also a teacher.
Omar Lewis, the creator and illustrator of the commercially successful The Wonderful World of Myat, is a Senior Lecturer and consultant on the UTT Animation Programme, whose extensive illustration career includes with top animation firm Marvel Comics in New York.
Nahdjla Carasco Bailey is the author of Time for Poetry (a long-standing school text) and Telling Tales From St. Lucia. Her teaching career spans the globe from New Zealand and Singapore to Britain and the Caribbean.
Polly Pattullo is a journalist and co-founder of Papillote Press, publisher of The Snake King of the Kalinago, Abraham’s Treasure, by Joanne Skerrett, and also the adult books The Gardens of Dominica and Home Again, both of which she co-authored.
Special guest
Kes the Illusionist, called the Caribbean’s greatest magician, has been mesmerising audiences for the last ten years.
