In November 2013, the NGC Bocas Lit Fest heads to San Fernando and Chaguanas for a weekend of readings and workshops, giving readers in South and Central Trinidad a taste of the annual literary festival.
On Saturday 16 November, a programme of readings hosted at two local bookshops — RIK Services in Gulf City Mall, La Romaine, and Nigel R. Khan Booksellers in Mid Centre Mall, Chaguanas — will feature a line-up of both celebrated and emerging authors, plus a performance poetry jam with some of T&T’s finest exponents of the popular genre.
Portraits of San Fernando
Michael Anthony, Susan Hannays-Abraham and Cassandra Patrovani read literary portraits of San Fernando — past and present — from classic and contemporary works by Michael Anthony, Shani Mootoo and Lawrence Scott.
Writing from the Southland
Perspectives of contemporary Trini life in the fiction of South-based writers Joanne Haynes, Willi Chen and Michael Cozier.
Fiction readings with Earl Lovelace, 2012 OCM Bocas Prize winner, and Sharon Millar, 2013 Commonwealth Writers Prize overall short story winner.
Spoken word performances by the 2 Cents Movement in the Gulf City Mall atrium.
Portraits of Central Trinidad
Savi Naipaul, Kenneth Ramchand, and Hollis “The Mighty Chalkdust” Liverpool read literary portraits of Central Trinidad from classic works by VS Naipaul, Sam Selvon and Derek Walcott.
From Folktale to Fiction
Talented new writers Vashti Bowlah and K. Jared Hosein read from their modern-day tales of morality and fantasy.
Snapshots of contemporary life in the words of poets Andre Bagoo, Danielle Boodoo-Fortune and Shivanee Ramlochan.
The internationally acclaimed author and winner of multiple literary prizes, including the 2012 OCM Bocas Prize, reads from his work!
Followed by spoken word performances by the 2 Cents Movement!
And on Sunday 17 November, the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts (SAPA) in San Fernando will be the venue for a day of writing workshops for budding authors. Workshop participants must pre-register in order to attend — visit our workshops page for details.
The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago is the title sponsor of the event. Workshops at the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts will be held in collaboration with the University of Trinidad and Tobago.
