Remembering the Merikins: River of Freedom

200 years ago, the Merikins — free black settlers from the United States — arrived in Trinidad, establishing close-knit communities that survive to this day. This special programme of events celebrates their history through words, images, and music, including the launch of a new book, River of Freedom.

River of Freedom: a performance by the Ibis Ensemble of Adam Walters’ chamber piece, inspired by the story of the Merikins, with images by artist Che Lovelace.
