Workshop: Songwriting – How Lyrics and Narrative Meet the Music Part 2

Singer, songwriter and musician, Ruth Osman takes participants on a 2-part guided journey through songwriting. Work on your own personal project and get feedback by the end of the sessions.

Session 1 – Content:
1. A brief history of song
2. Why do we sing?
3. The journey of a song: Point of View and Trajectory.
4. Activity: Writers will be asked to come up with a point of view/message and its trajectory/narrative.
5. Prosody: The art of composing lyrics (lines, rhyme, rhythm, etc.)
6. Activity: Writing lyrics. Writers will be asked to write a verse or chorus (lyrics). They will be expected to do this within the framework of the point of view and trajectory that they established earlier in the workshop.
7. Sharing and discussion: Writers will share their pieces and the group will discuss.
8. Conclusion: Revision of main points arising from the presentation and discussions.

Assignment: Writers will be asked to complete the song that they started, or to create a new one if they so desire.

Session 2 – Content:
1. Which comes first: melody or lyrics?
2. Lyrics and Melody – how they work together to support the ideas, message and mood of a song.
3. Beginnings, Endings and Transitions – How melody can move a song along.
4. Activity: Writers will be asked to create a melody for the lyrics that they would have written OR to write lyrics to preset melodies that will be provided by the facilitator.
5. Sharing and discussion: Writers will share their pieces and the group will discuss.
6. Some final songwriting tips.
7. Conclusion: Revision of main points arising from the presentation and discussions.

1. Numerous examples from Ruth’s original work and from popular songs will be used.
2. These are interactive sessions
