Biography

Jan Carson is a novelist, short story writer and community arts facilitator from Belfast, Northern Ireland who is currently ARIEL Writer in Residence at the Université de Lorraine, France. The Raptures (Doubleday, 2022) was shortlisted for the 2022 Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year Award, and The Fire Starters (Doubleday) for the Strega European Prize (Italy), the Prix Femina International, the 2020 Dalkey Book Prize and Prix Medici International (France), winning the 2019 EU Prize for Literature for Ireland and the Kitschies Prize for Speculative Fiction 2020. Jan won the 2016 Harper’s Bazaar short story competition and was shortlisted for the BBC National Story Prize (2020), Sean O’Faolain Short Story Prize (2016) and the An Post Irish Short Story of the Year Award (2021). Her work has been translated into over a dozen different languages and two novels have been optioned and are in screen development.
