More Than A Literary Festival

Season of Independence 2022

Trinidad and Tobago’s 60th anniversary of Independence is a moment for both celebration and contemplation. Two generations into the journey of nationhood, what is our sense of ourselves? How do we understand the history that made us, and what do we imagine for our future?

The NGC Bocas Lit Fest’s special month-long programme of events, running from Independence Day on 31 August to Republic Day on 24 September — two annual patriotic holidays that bracket the “Season of Independence” — looks backwards and forwards at once. Newly commissioned writing by T&T authors reflects on our past and future, while a series of discussions and readings focus on recent books that ask questions about the meaning of belonging and citizenship.

Accompanying these sessions, a specially curated playlist drawing on the NGC Bocas Lit Fest video archives will be hosted on our YouTube platform for one month, bringing together a range of past events covering T&T’s history and culture, featuring some of our most exciting writers, thinkers, and performers.
