More Than A Literary Festival

We Lit! 2023/2024

WE LIT! is a Bocas Lit Fest youth project sponsored by the JB Fernandes Memorial Trust, now in its second year.

The project is based on the idea that English language and literature are tools for academic development and self-empowerment in everyday life for young people.

The programme’s goals are to:

  • Continue introducing underserved youth to the power of literature (reading and writing) as a tool for personal development via a series of in-person and online components.
  • Increase student interest and engagement in language and literature education by offering a diverse range of means of expression, including their own publications.
  • Help students from disadvantaged backgrounds access quality English language and English literature lessons through creative channels.
  • Improve students’ academic performance in English language and English literature by developing their literary skills and self confidence.
  • Build on student well-being through a sense of accomplishment which would be reflected in improvement in their schoolwork.

WE LIT! School Tour

Thousands of students across the country will enjoy a theatrical performance that uses elements of spoken word poetry and drama. At each school visit, youth will be exposed to the power of reading and writing for personal and academic development and have the opportunity to craft their own literary work.

WE LIT! Travelling Journal

Students write across genres in a virtual book that goes from school to school, including issues relevant to youth and how to manage them. The best of the students’ writing submissions from August to December 2023 will be published in a collection similar to last year’s student chapbook.
