Exclusive Publishing Deals Offered to Caribbean Publishers through the Burt Award Programme

burt final_caribbean_logo_webCODE’s Burt Award for Caribbean Literature is an annual literary award and readership initiative that aims to provide engaging and culturally-relevant books for young people across the Caribbean.

Up to $22,000 CAD in prize money will be awarded to up to three winners, who will be announced on April 29th at an award ceremony during the 2016 NGC Bocas Lit Fest in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

As part of its ongoing commitment to promote writing by Caribbean writers for Caribbean readers, CODE will facilitate the publication of unpublished winning manuscripts by Caribbean publishers. In the run-up to the Award announcement, we are seeking eligible publishers who are interested in the opportunity to (re)publish a winning self-published book or manuscript. You can find out more about the titles shortlisted for the Award here.

The Award was established by CODE – a Canadian charitable organisation that has been supporting literacy and learning for over 50 years – in collaboration with William (Bill) Burt and the Literary Prizes Foundation, the Bocas Lit Fest.

The Burt Award programme offers significant benefits to publishers of the winning titles, including a guaranteed purchase of up to 6,000 copies of the winning titles, and marketing and promotional support from both CODE and the Bocas Lit Fest.

To date, CODE has distributed 15,000 award-winning books to readers in eleven Caribbean countries. It further supports local writing and publishing through workshops for writers and editors and through reading promotion initiatives, such as sponsoring events that connect winning authors directly with young readers.

If your publishing house is interested in this exclusive publishing opportunity, please download and complete the Publishers Declaration form. NOTE: This opportunity is open to eligible Caribbean-based publishing houses only.

Publishers’ declarations should be returned to [email protected] by April 20, 2016.

CODE and Bocas Lit Fest will review the completed Publisher’s Declaration forms and, in close consultation with the winning author(s), select the most appropriate Publisher(s) based on the responses provided.
